Italian MotoGP at Mugelo – May 22, 2016

This was a great race filled with excitement as well as disappointment.  Rossi put in a balls-out qualifying lap and was able to grab the pole.  When the flag dropped, Lorenzo squirted out ahead followed by Valentino and Marquez.  As the race unfolded, Rossi was glued to Lorenzo and tried several times to pass him at the end of the long straight but could not pull it off as Lorenzo was truly great on the brakes slowing from 200+mph for turn one.  Unfortunately, Rossi’s motor gave up the fight in a cloud of smoke about half-way through the race.  Marquez was only half a second behind Rossi when Rossi’s engine blew.  This was a great disappointment because Rossi was very competitive and the race looked to be a three way battle to the end.

After Rossi dropped out, Marquez very gradually pulled up behind Lorenzo.  Towards the end of the last lap Marquez got past Lorenzo and began to pull a few bike lengths on him.  Somehow, Lorenzo dug deep, managed to close up on Marquez and as they both got onto the front straight, heading to the checker, Lorenzo got by Marquez for the win.  Ultra-super exciting race.  Loved it!  It was just too bad that Rossi was not in the mix at the end.
