The Chinese Grand Prix Formula 1 race from this past weekend was very interesting! The top 7 finishers are:

1st         Nico Rosberg – Mercedes           #25     1:38:53.891

2nd        Sebastian Vettel – Ferrari

3rd         Daniil Kvyat – Red Bull

4th         Daniel Ricciardo – Red Bull

5th         Kimi Raikkonen – Ferrari

6th         Felipe Massa – Williams

7th         Lewis Hamilton – Mercedes

Rosberg started on the pole with Ricciardo next to him on super soft compound tires, with Raikkonen and Vettel starting in third and fourth respectively.

Ricciardo made a great start and aced Rosberg into turn one. The rest of the field bunched up going into turn one. Unfortunately Raikkonen and Vettel got squeezed together colliding with each other and damaging their front wings. Hamilton, starting from the rear of the pack also got wacked in turn one and he too had to pit for a new front wing set up.

Unfortunately for Ricciardo, on lap three while still leading, his left rear tire was cut by debris from the earlier crashes and he had to pit, leaving Rosberg to drive a flawless race to finish 37 seconds ahead of Vettel.

Vettel drove a superb and aggressive race clawing his way onto the podium with a well-deserved second place. Kvyat had one of his best races, looking very together bagging a third place finish.

Hamilton also looked good even though he started from the rear of the grid. He was able to work his way up to fifth toward the end of the race, however; he was complaining of limited front end grip and eventually had to settle for seventh.

The take away for me is that The Red Bulls with Renault power were very quick and competitive. And, despite the early carnage, all 22 cars finished the race.

Even though some of the other teams and drivers are looking pretty racy, clearly; Rosberg was the class act of this race. He has now won six in a row and is looking very strong. I would like to see more action mixing it up for first place to make things even more exciting and interesting. Hopefully this will happen if the other teams continue to improve.

Rosberg was able to build a big lead up front.

Jorge Lorenzo said he “needed a challenge” when the Movistar Yamaha rider made his decision to join Ducati at the end of the season. The three time champion signed a two year deal with Ducati for 2017 and 2018, but remains focused for his last and final season with Yamaha. He said in a statement:

“What will happen in the future is unpredictable but from here on I just want to enjoy these 15 races that I have left with Yamaha to try and ratify the World Championship. This is right now my only target.”
